The Centre for the Study of Environmental Change

CSEC is an interdisciplinary centre, now based in Lancaster's Department of Sociology, which exists to develop a fuller understanding of the social, political and cultural dimensions of debates around environment and new technologies, and of their implications for public policy and society.

CSEC’s research and teaching focuses on some of the most pressing issues of our time:

  • Climate change
  • Biodiversity loss
  • The genetic sciences
  • Participatory democracy
  • Reflexive modernity
  • Nature and capital in crisis
  • Conflicts over basic human resources (food, energy, water)

CSEC’s approach to these issues is distinctive and derives partly from its historical roots – in environmental activism and the interdisciplinary study of science, technology and society (science studies or STS). Find out more about the history of CSEC.
